Google is by far, the most popular search engine in today’s world. If you want to find out information about anything, your first reaction would be “Lets Google it!” It statistics are to be believed, Google accounts for more than 50% of all searches done in a year. Factors it relies on Like any other search engine, Google also follows some criteria to rank the websites. So, in order to figure on the top slots of the search results, you will need to address these key factors on your website. Some of the important factors Google takes into consideration are: • Number of Backlinks • Age of the website • Content quality Backlinks This is perhaps the strongest deciding factor for the search engine results. In the past, Google simply relied on the quantity of backlinks of a website to place in on a high ranking scale. Higher the number of sites linking to you, higher the ranking you get. But with time, as fake and scrupulous means of link exchange rose, Google changed its algorithm altogether. Now, it takes into consideration the nature of websites linking to you. It’s not just the quantity, but also the quality that matters now. And there are yet a group of factors that decide the quality of websites linking to you. These are: Age of the links- Links gain relevancy and weightage as it ages. The longer the links exist on the web, higher their value becomes. Essentially it takes a good 6 months for a link to gain value in cyberspace. Location of the link- Where the link is located on the World Wide Web is an important criterion to check its quality. For instance, a link located above the fold of a website will be more relevant than those placed at the footers. Anchor text- Also important is the linking text that is used. Always use your target keywords in the link text. However, make sure that no link is a replica of another. Try and include slight variations in the text so that it sounds different. Relevancy- Links gain more value if they are from a website not belonging to the same industry as yours. For instance, if you are a website design & development firm, linking from any corresponding website will do you lesser good than if you link with a beauty website. PageRank – The page rank of a website is a crucial element that decides the quality of a website. Getting a link from a site with high page rank is way better than getting links from two sites that are poor on the page rank. Age of the website The due time of a website’s existence on the World Wide Web is a deciding factor for Google to check its legitimacy. More the number of years your website has been on the web more will be your legitimacy as per Google. Subsequently, higher will be the ranking. Content We have all heard about the phrase “Content is the king” and I guess it was coined as per Google’s strategy of evaluating a website. More the content on your website, more likely it is for people to find information they desire. However, make sure the content is relevant to the purpose of a website and is updated regularly. Google seeks fresh content, so a good idea will be to have a company blog, where you can post in interesting stuff pertaining to your industry on a regular basis.
