With Web 2.0 becoming the new buzzword of the web design industry, there have come some new styles of design. Gradients, reflections, drop shadows and rounded corners have been traditionally associated with the Web 2.0 but in recent times some new trends have evolved from them. And many of then are just a doing a second term in the industry. Here are some latest trends: No Page Fold The fold of the website refers to the mythical line that divides the area of the website which can be viewed without scrolling down from the rest which needs the use of scroll bar. It has been maintained over the years that all the critical elements of the page should be kept above the fold. But this is changing! Designers are increasingly willing to experiment and rejecting the theory of ‘above the fold.’ We have made peace with the idea that visitors are comfortable to scroll down to view the full website. Moreover, the fold line depends on screen resolution, browser type and window size, and that can differ from user to user. The key content should still be placed above the fold, but that is not to say everything has to be there. Functional Footers Footer links have always been underused or even unused in worse cases. It was only used as a pretty sign off signal and a place to place all the ‘non-categorized’ things. But now, website designs are making good use of it to provide supporting navigation and information. They contain links like contact us, link to the site blog, news feeds etc. Resolution dependent layout This is perhaps the best trend of the season. The layout of the website adapts itself as per the viewable area. A great example of this is at resolutions greater than 800 by 600, the content is displayed in a third column on the screen. And where the resolution id 800 by 600 the content is pushed down to the bottom of the main column of the screen. This approach is a better bet than both fixed width layouts and fluid layouts. . Right column navigation The navigation bar is always placed either at the top centre of the left side of the web page. But in recent times, right column navigation is gaining popularity. Blogs have been the top reason to have fuelled it because of their default tabs that are placed towards the right. And moreover, right column navigation has its benefits: • It places the content at the most visible space • The cursor always hovers to the right • It goes in sync with the tabs on books Focus on Content Unlike earlier, websites are more and more focusing on the content they put on the website than the appealing designs and graphics. Rather they are being built to maximize the readability and accessibility features for the visitors. Emphasis on Typography Website designers have always undermined the importance of typography blaming it on limited availability of fonts. However, typography deals with much more than typeface, like leading, spacing, and style. Nowadays many designers are making use of it and exploring the various facets of typeface.
